Ron’s legendary community support has been recognized with many awards, among them 1997 Hamilton Citizen of the Year, 2011 Burlington Entrepreneur of the Year, and an Honorary Doctor of Law from McMaster University.
In 2014, Ron took up the call to lead as the Chairman of the Burlington Flood Disaster Relief Committee. With roads, highways and over 3,000 Burlington homes affected by significant flooding, Ron was instrumental in raising $905,000 from the community through a 100-day fundraising campaign. Additionally, the committee, formed by Burlington Foundation at the request of the City, executed a 12-month program, approving 272 claims totaling $2.7 million to help the community recover.
Ron is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Fox 40 pealess Whistle which is sold in over 100 countries. The Fox 40 Whistle is officially sanctioned by many professional and amateur sports including the NFL, CFL, NCAA and the NBA. Ron was the NCAA’s first and only Canadian Referee; he has officiated professional basketball since 1963 and refereed a full NCAA schedule until his retirement in 1999. He was selected by the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) as the recipient of the 2016 Gold Whistle Award, which is officiating’s highest honour. Ron is also owner of Fluke Transportation Ltd., and was named among Profit Magazine’s Top 10 Canadian Entrepreneurs of the decade. Ron joined the Burlington Foundation Board of Directors in 2014, contributed as Vice-Chair in 2015, and served as Chair 2016 to 2018.
