Halton is not immune to the reality of suicide.
“It’s absolutely an issue everywhere,” said Dr. Jane Storrie, a Burlington-based clinical psychologist and co-chair of the Mental Wellness Alliance launched by the Burlington Community Foundation (BCF) in response to growing mental health concerns.
“We know that one in five people in Ontario experience mental health problems. If we look at suicide specifically, we know that about 230,000 adults in Ontario have contemplated suicide in about the last 12 months.”
When looking at the number of teens and young adults who experience mental health issues, that ratio drops to one in four, according to statistics. It’s the number of teens who have committed suicide or seriously considered suicide that is particularly troubling, said Storrie.
