More than a decade ago, following her own battle with breast cancer, Dorothy Borovich decided to create something meaningful through the Burlington Community Foundation.
She started the Healthy Reflections Canada Endowment Fund, as a way of giving back. Healthy Reflections Canada has granted more than
$20,000. The focus is now on building the endowed fund, which provides a long-term, sustainable source of funding each year.
The fund focuses on supporting individuals who have been diagnosed with breast cancer who are financially challenged for treatment not covered.
“The Healthy Reflections Fund was created from a desire to support individuals facing breast cancer and helping people navigate some of the challenges that often come with a breast cancer diagnosis. Individuals should not have to face additional financial stress when they are facing a life-threatening disease. They need to be able to focus on their recovery.”
Individuals may face unexpected costs during treatment and that can cause increased stress. Funds are dedicated to supporting treatment not covered through insurance, government health plans, and other programs.
Dorothy and the Healthy Reflections Canada Committee are also giving back to local seniors in need. In the fall of 2026, the second year of the Warm Embrace Program was launched, which provides cozy blankets to seniors identified through Acclaim Health’s services. For every donation of $100 or more to the Healthy Reflections Fund during the 2026 program, a blanket will be donated to Acclaim Health to be provided to a senior.
“Something as simple as a blanket can bring comfort, warmth, and a sense of connection – a couple of clients said the blankets were like a hug,” said Dorothy. “To be able to provide that kind of support and joy while building a fund that will support individuals battling breast cancer is a win-win for everyone.”
While blankets are currently distributed through Acclaim Health’s services, Dorothy envisions the program could expand in additional years.
Donations to the endowed Healthy Reflections Canada Fund can be made online through Burlington Community Foundation’s Giving Hub. Individuals will receive an immediate tax receipt for donations of $20 and above.
